Abstract
First-generation student-athletes and student-athletes from low SES backgrounds are subject to multiple levels of stress related to the intersectionality of their role. In addition to the stress associated with being a student-athlete, both first-generation and low-SES students often experience greater difficulties adjusting to higher education. This qualitative study aimed to better understand the challenges and pressure this population faces and the specific ways in which they manage those challenges and their role. Five male participants on an athletic scholarship from Division 1 football programs were interviewed. Based on emerging themes, experiences were characterized into three stages: before, during, and after college. The primary focus of this study was on the college stage and how this population managed their role in maintaining their academic and athletic status. Two significant themes emerged: time management and communication. The findings provide insight into how this population can be better supported in higher education.
