The focus of this paper is on the lack of support and resources for pregnant and parenting people affected by substance use, and the increased advocacy that is needed to help this population to be successful in their parenting roles. The findings show the complex system of care that this population requires with significant focus on the effect that removal of a child has on the parent. There is also a focus on breaking the intergenerational cycle of trauma, the need for Indigenous cultural safety, trauma and violence informed care, a harm reduction approach, a woman-centered approach and the need for an interdisciplinary team approach to care. The literature also illustrates the importance of safe and stable housing, destigmatization, the social return on investment (SROI) and theories applied to the treatment of pregnant and parenting people affected by substance use. The findings provide a foundation for healthcare providers to work with this population optimally and effectively, ensuring they receive the best care possible.
