dc.description.abstract | Although in recent years there has been growing scholarship on Asian American athletes, there still remains a lack of research regarding Asian American athletes' experience in sport psychology which makes it difficult for sport psychology professionals to practice in a culturally competent manner. It is important that as the field makes cultural and diverse advances, it encompasses Asian Americans as well. There is a noticeable gap in the scholarship pertaining to the knowledge of Asian American athletes' perception of self in sport and its impact on athletic performance. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to extend our current understanding of Asian American athletes' experiences in sport and explore how societal pressures and stereotypes can affect an Asian American's athletic identity. The primary research question will explore how being an Asian American athlete affects how he or she perceives him or herself in their sport? A secondary research question will seek to explore how an athlete's self-perception may affect his or her performance. | |
