This capstone delved into the exploration of vicarious trauma experienced by mental health clinicians who work with trauma survivors. Grounded in constructivist self-development theory and trauma-informed care, the project aimed to understand what clinicians need to know to recognize and manage vicarious trauma. The literature review examined the history, description, distinction from similar terms, and symptoms of vicarious trauma, in addition to the individual, organizational, and systemic risk factors. Interventions for managing vicarious trauma were also reviewed; psychoeducation, mindfulness, somatic interventions, cognitive trauma processing, supervision, peer support, and artistic and spiritual practices. A psychoeducational booklet was developed from these findings, offering practical tools for mental health clinicians to recognize and manage vicarious trauma.
