It is largely accepted in the counselling literature that metaphor can be a useful tool in supporting clients to better understand and transform their lives (Lyddon, Clay and Sparks, 2001; Legowski & Brownlee, 2001). My thesis will be an exploration of ways to combine narrative therapy with illustrative practices that build on and work with client metaphors. First, some of the philosophical foundations of narrative therapy will be outlined. Next, the following narrative therapy practices will be explored: externalizing problems, reauthoring conversations, re-membering conversations, and an understanding of the ways in which persons make meaning within the contexts of their lives and relationships. Drawing from a series of published videotaped counselling sessions, I will provide alternative responses to clients that demonstrate this proposed process.
