In the present day context, because of the over-emphasized use of the technology, the orientation of risks associated with software development is increasing. Project management in the present day’s context has to deal with different types of risks including immature requirements, divergent estimation of cost and time, stricter project delivery milestones, funding up uncertainty, backup issues, and retention of skilled staff. All these factors represent risk areas that might affect the smooth progress of software development projects. Historically, the frequency and intensity of risks affecting the management of engineering tasks on traditional software development projects is very high. Distribution of the development process over different geographical locations has exposed software development to additional, yet different risks requiring close attention to the risk areas for mitigation planning. Based on an extensive literature review and a qualitative survey with 26 employees of the sponsoring organization, this study examines the risks affecting project using distributed teams. The research suggests the implementation of agile practices in the form intra and inter-group pair programming will improve communication among team members and mitigate other risks identified through the literature review and the qualitative survey.
