Abstract
This study evaluates a Sport Psychology Consultation as an intervention for adherence in an exercise program. Two participants were randomly selected from Montclair Gym, Oakland. Both participants' completed three half hour interviews, which were audio taped. The interviews were unstructured and directed by the participant, to replicate the process of sport psychology consultation. It was hypothesized that through meeting with a Sport Psychology consultant, any participant can identify their predominant challenge to adherence in an exercise program, learn a skill to overcome the challenge and thus be able to adhere to the exercise program.
A phenomenological analysis of the data was conducted to organize the results. The results indicate that the sport psychology consultation intervention did identify and individually address the participant's challenge to adherence. The participant's implemented appropriate techniques to alter their barriers to adherence. However, adherence beyond the intervention period could not be determined. Direction for further research and suggestions were made.
