Abstract

This project examined the use of reflective ultraviolet radiation to visualize external trauma. A brief history is given and the mechanisms underlying the technique are detailed. Controlled research and selected case studies are presented for analysis and synthesis. It is determined that reflective ultraviolet radiation is effective for visualizing external trauma. The technique provides the ability to visualize and document soft tissue injuries up to six months after they have healed to the unaided viewer. The issues of Daubert admissibility are discussed. The current literature was insufficient to formulate a specific protocol for reflective ultraviolet scanning or photographic documentation. General protocols to provide controls are proposed. The utility supports a wider application of the technique by a range of field personnel to include those dealing with child protection, investigation of domestic violence, forensic pathologists, civil investigators, etc.
