dc.description.abstract | This study focused on several areas of aging that need to be addressed: the messages that women receive as they age in our society, the stereotypes associated with those messages, how these myths are maintained, and medical management of the aging population. The study explored the invisibility of aging women in our society, with a particular focus on how medical professionals treat older women. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 11 middle-class women aged 70-85, living independently in their own homes or in independent senior apartments. The interview covered such subjects as the status of their health, how long they had lived in their communities, how long they had been with their physicians, and if they noticed any differences between their current physicians and their previous physicians. The interviews also obtained information about their hospital experiences and how that experience might have been improved. Data were analyzed using content analysis. The researcher discovered that most of these women were content with their physicians, felt heard by them, and had few negative things to say about the treatment they received from their medical health professionals. These women did not feel cheated out of good medical care due to their aging process. The results did not support much of the literature regarding the treatment of aging women in our society. This may be due to the fact that these were women who were able to manage their medical treatment and were generally able to discuss their concerns and fears with their physicians, with whom they had established relationships. If not, then the participants had no difficulty finding alternative methods to gather the information they needed or find someone to advocate for them. These were women not afraid to ask questions. | |
