Abstract
The purpose of this project is twofold. First, this project seeks to protect furniture collections in museums and historic houses from damage incurred during the course of non-exhibition use. Specifically, it focuses on objects that are used for everyday furnishings, collections that are actually used for their intended purpose as furniture, not as decorative pieces. Second, this project seeks to inform collection managers of the damage that can result from using an object for non-exhibition purposes. This project explores both potential physical damage to collections and ethical/ legal issues that can arise with such use. The resulting product will be a set of guidelines for collections managers/ registrars to inform them about how to care for objects involved in this type of use.
