Abstract

The purpose of this master's project is to improve the management of, and consequently the access to, family archival materials in historic house museums through the development of an archives processing guide using standard archives principles and procedures. Historic house museum staff need to be better prepared and trained to care for family archival collections to ensure the survival of valuable, and often fragile, materials for present and future generations. This study is concerned with assessing and improving the current methods used in processing personal papers from family collections, specifically in historic house museums in the United States. The product of this master's project is a professional guide to assist historic house museum staff in processing family archival materials according to current archives standards. The guide defines which items are considered archival and provides basic, step-by-step processing instructions. It includes a glossary of archival terms, a list of museum and archives professional organizations, a list of archival storage materials suppliers with estimated costs for basic archival supplies, and a selected bibliography. The guide is written for historic house museum staff who lack professional training in archives management, yet it may be used by staff in other types of museums as well.
