Abstract
This paper investigates the effects of law enforcement agencies practicing racial profiling as a legitimate law enforcement tool in order to fight crime at a more beneficial manner for society. The types of profiling, criminal/offender-based, and racial, are differentiated by their definitions, and by whether the government or states deem them to be a violation of an individual’s rights under the Constitution. Historical and Modern times of racial profiling have increased the likelihood of bias and misconceptions of law enforcement. Racial Profiling increases the likelihood of an arrest in traffic stops; Criminal vs. Racial Profiling, and how it establishes justification among law enforcement when making arrest; Offender profiles increase the likelihood of an arrest when implying racial profiling; and Profiling can provide a means for prioritizing leads & suspects. The analysis reveals how racial profiling as a legitimate tool to fight crime does have its advantages & disadvantages within law enforcement.
