Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the effects of a positive therapeutic relationship on treatment outcomes. The target population are young people in late adolescence who are receiving treatment in a drug and alcohol treatment centre. Furthermore these young people are struggling with drug and alcohol and mental-health issues. These people have been referred to as dealing with a concurrent disorder. The argument is that despite the intricacies of treatment planning for a concurrent disorder, the relationship between the young person and their therapist has more impact on positive outcomes than the applications of psychological theory. This thesis also explores the affects of diagnostic labels on people and reviews some counselling skills that can help build a positive therapeutic relationship.
