Abstract
The following study will investigate American funerals from a dual perspective which includes the bereaved and the deceased as active participants in the rite. It will present an alternative perspective on bereavement by incorporating both the bereaved and the deceased. Chapter I will begin by providing a brief overview of funerals in order to demonstrate their place in history. Included in that chapter will be the specific role of the American method and a general description of a typical American ceremony. The third chapter will investigate the part played by the bereaved and the role of the funeral in the grief process. Chapter IV will investigate the role of the deceased. Questions such as, where the deceased are and what they are doing will be addressed. The final chapter will examine the similarities of experience between the bereaved and the deceased and provide possible suggestions for improvement by pointing out potential consequences.
