Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine factors that influence members of minorities to become docents in art museums that exhibit ethnic art. At six selected museums interviews were held with curators of education, docent coordinators, and other appropriate personnel. The results of the study appear to indicate that members of minorities are more likely to volunteer in programs that offer training classes at night or on weekends. Factors that may be of importance, although subject to further research, include active participation in the recruitment process by members of minorities, and costs to participate in the program. Recommendations for increasing minority involvement in art museum docent programs focused on the need for museum staff commitment to make recruitment of minorities a priority. Guidelines for accomplishing this suggested that one person be delegated the responsibility for coordinating planning with community organizations of specific cultural or ethnic groups.
