Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyze the exhibition, "The Watercolors of William Keith," at the Hearst Art Gallery of Saint Mary's College, Moraga, California, from January 14 to March 7, 1979. I chose this exhibition as a thesis. topic for three reasons. First, because of my position as director and only regular employee of the Hearst Art Gallery, I participated in all of the tasks of preparing the exhibition. Second, I chose this topic because the show contained all of the main elements of any exhibition. In addition to the basic tasks of object selection, record keeping, budget management, public relations and installation design and implementation, the show required preparation of educational materials (including a catalogue) and negotiations for loans from institutions and private collectors. Third, the comprehensiveness of the exhibition gave me the opportunity to create a format for analysis and assessment of exhibitions in general. This is especially useful to me because the Hearst Art Gallery is new, but hopefully other galleries, especially other small galleries operated by colleges or universities, or students of museum practice will also find the analysis and format useful for assessing exhibitions.
