Abstract

Women were inspired to face themselves and their strengths, weaknesses, dreams and fears. As a group, women felt the grip of their history and could no longer bear the restrictions of their gender. Both silently and demonstratively, women began to realize the subtle birth within themselves. This birth was a new stirring of their femininity, which allowed them to be women in different ways. They were awakened; awakened in ways that we are just beginning to see the fruits of in lifestyles, disciplines, and philosophies. Women were awakened to new ways of questioning who they were and what they had to do. Women had embarked upon a journey to uncover their own mystery. They had begun to search for what they sensed was their essence, soul or true Self. This unprecedented shift in the consciousness of women provided fresh opportunities for the emergence of the new feminine being we see today. But what triggered this shift in women? What profound stimulus was released to awaken women from their sleep of the past? There has been some speculation about why this shift occurred. Economists, feminists, psychologists and others have tried to analyze this phenomenon. Society has taken this happening for granted. This thesis will propose that a spiritual source was the impetus behind the recent awakening of the women's movement.
