Abstract

The transition to motherhood is an emotional experience. Current services for new mothers do not adequately address this or the impacts to identity and the need of community development in this period. There is also a need for support in creating a self-care plan to promote new mother wellness in this transition period. The Motherhood Passage is a workshop series grounded in the need to hold space for all new mothers - whether by birth or adoption - to appreciate their personal experience in the transition to motherhood. Inspired by the Grief Recovery Method® as well as Antonovsky's salutogenesis model, Sheldon's self-determination theory, and Wilber's Integral theory, The Motherhood Passage provides a frame for navigating this emotional experience of becoming a mother, including discussion of the impacts to the whole person identity and the role of community in this period. Tools and space for evaluating self-care practices are provided in the last of the four modules.
