Abstract

As adult women evolve through their life span, the midlife age or second adulthood can be a time of triumph or despair. Midlife transitions are important signposts from the perspective of human development models. The experience of a meaningful midlife transition is imperative because adults at are expected to live longer than at any previous time in history. The PATH model was created for use in the context of professional life coaching to assist clients with improvement of the quality of life at a midlife transition point. The successful navigation of a midlife transition depends on recognition of certain patterns of the experience of change. PATH directs clients with focus on their internal process of change. In my proposed PATH model, there are four qualities or categories that are essential from the perspective of internal renewal. Play, Acknowledgement, Trust, and Health are the essential categories that are built upon an ontological perspective of adult development. PATH assists both the coach and the client in collaboration by providing modes through which philosophy, inquiry, and transformative practice can be engaged for the client undergoing an inner transformative process.
