Abstract

This project looked at six girls who were involved in a mentoring program called Sportsbridge. The purpose was to find successful mentoring strategies to counteract self-esteem loss in these girls. Each girl answered a set of questions about themselves and about having a mentor. The data were then transcribed and analyzed qualitatively for common themes. The researcher, herself a mentor who believes mentoring to be a positive experience, had to keep herself from leading the participants in a certain desired direction. Several themes emerged. They were: *Spending time with her mentor *Having fun *Leaming/T1.ying new things *Feeling safe *Meeting new people *Having an adult to talk to *Having an adult to relate to
