Abstract

This study took a look at some of the motivational aspects of three mountain sports: mountain running, mountaineering, and rock climbing. Movement as a form of motivation was considered, and movement awareness, relative to the nature of the sport, was discussed. Elite athletes from each group were given the Motivational Analysis Test (MAT). In addition, elite and average athletes responded to questions concerning motivations, and aspects of movement. Results indicated a change in motivational patterns over time in a sport, and also between athletes in the different sports. Movement was seen as a motivation more frequently by rock climbers: The complexity and demand of their sport were thought to bring this about. The therapeutic aspects of these sports and the validity of them as a means of creative expression are discussed. I suggest future studies that continue with this work and include a study of the development of motivations over time in each sport. This would be an additional aspect of characterizing each sport.
