Abstract
The common reactions to the criminal acts committed by sex offenders include disgust, anger, and a feeling of increased vulnerability. Many people feel sex offenders should be locked up indefinitely, castrated, or put to death. In reality, however, over one-half of convicted sex offenders live in our communities under conditional supervision. The inherent problem when releasing sex offenders into the community is the likelihood they will repeat their crimes. To address this problem, intensive treatment programs for sex offenders has been developed to be used in combination with traditional measures such as incarceration, probation, and parole. These programs are continually evolving and require re-evaluation to assure sex offenders are less dangerous when they are released into the communities than they were at the time of their arrest. The purpose of this study is to determine if polygraphing post convicted sex offenders is a therapeutic advantage for assessing risk management and accountability during sex offender treatment.
