Abstract

Death investigations of individuals whose remains have begun the decomposition process presents investigative teams with a difficult problem. Determination of the cause of death and developing a narrow window of time in which the death occurred are key elements that need to be determined by the investigative teams. These two issues can assist the investigative team in ascertaining if the suspect’s alibi is valid. The study of the journey of the human remains from death to it basic elements is known as taphonomy. This journey comprises multiple independent and interrelated processes, including decompositional changes in the body and the effects of insect activity. The interpretation of the multiple interrelated processes is difficult and can at times provide conflicting information to those who are not well versed in the processes. The investigative team should solicit the expertise and advice of those individuals who have a great deal of expertise in taphonomy.
