Abstract

The development and refinement of photographic techniques in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries have made visual images increasingly available to those who need them in a small, compact format. Thousands of buildings, tons of sculpture, and acres of paintings in the form of images can now be stored in a drawer or on a shelf. As collections of slides and photographs grow in size, there is a corresponding need to find a logical system with which to organize these materials so that they may be readily accessible. With the increasingly important role of computerization in the storage and retrieval of information, any new slide classification and cataloging system must also address itself to this new technology.
