Abstract

This research focused on the components of a successful relationship between the project sponsor and the project manager of organizational project teams, and those actions and behaviors on the part of the sponsor that can contribute to the success of those teams. The findings of this study provide a better understanding of those sponsor actions and behaviors that are most critical to forming an effective project team and facilitating the work of that team over the life cycle of the project, contributing to high team performance and successful outcomes. The basic assertions of this study are that by paying attention to certain actions and behaviors inherent in the role of the project sponsor - when aligned with a skilled project manager, effective team structure and committed team members - an organization is more likely to develop and sustain high performing project teams that consistently produce successful outcomes.
