Abstract

This master's project aims to fill the current void in the museum community regarding museums' use of online auctions. The Background section of this project reviews the ways in which museums have traditionally acquired objects and compares the components of traditional and online auctions. The Findings and Conclusions section reveals the results of interviews of museum professionals that use online auctions. The results of a survey I conducted to determine the extent of use of online auctions by museum professionals and assess the benefits and drawbacks of online auctions are included in this section as well. The final Product of this project is a website that aims to provide museum professionals with resources to use when evaluating the decision to purchase objects through online auctions.
