Abstract

When contemplating the recognized role of a motherly figure, her innate urge to nurture, love, and above all, protect her children come to mind. Unfortunately, acts of neonaticide, infanticide, and filicide occur at an alarmingly high rate; some being committed daily. Studies have been conducted to gain a better understanding of the motives behind these occurrences; examining patterns and isolating common factors to better explain the general first-person perspectives and personality profiles. The motives for these atrocities have been studied and examined to find patterns and common factors to better understand why mothers commit these murders. By recounting the details of events through mothers' perspective and collecting facts about each mother's background and character, scientists and psychologists have attempted to derive common traits to help identify types of personalities linked to maternally homicidal tendencies. With classification systems created to analyze determinant factors used to identify mothers at risk, the prevention of filicide is possible.
