Abstract

This study explores the multiple relationships among an athlete's self-confidence in both sports and non-sport activities, his perception of how society judges sports and athletes, his competitive orientation (outcome or win-oriented or performance-oriented), and the differences between female and male athletes in these relationships. Five different inventories were administered to athletes to obtain information in these areas. It was found that even though an athlete can derive tremendous gains through participation in sports, the athlete often cannot apply these gains to other areas of his life. Several possible reasons for this are cited in this study. Two ways to help the athlete are to help him/her become more involved in nonsport activities and to reduce the emphasis on winning.
