Abstract

The purpose of my project is to inform the museum professional community and museum board members about the history and laws affecting the collecting of cultural property by art museums in the United States and the use of museum policies to govern this collecting. The project focuses on the collecting of Mayan pre-Columbian artwork to show in detail the history, effects, risks and policies that surround the collecting of cultural property. To gather data, I surveyed art museums in the United States who have Mayan artwork in their collections, focusing on their current collecting practices and the policies that govern the collecting. In addition, I requested copies of the pertinent policies and conducted follow-up interviews with professionals about the use of these policies and queried whether they considered the policies necessary and useful tools.
