Abstract

This master's project determines a baseline for the status of succession planning in California museums using a literature review, data collected from a survey and interviews. Seventy-nine executive directors responded to a survey (see Appendix A) and five were interviewed concerning specific practices at their institutions. Director tenures and the existence of succession planning roughly matched those found in two similar studies—CompassPoint's Daring to Lead 2006 and the Illinois Arts Alliance Foundation's (2003) States of the Arts: Career Conditions of Nonprofit Arts Professionals in Chicago. However, my research delved further to determine whether certain factors (such as annual operating budget or length of tenure of the executive director) had any relationship to the existence of a succession plan or internal successors.
