Abstract
This project evaluates the effectiveness of a Performance Enhancement Group at the University of California at Davis. Former participants of the group take part in individual interviews in which they discuss their experience. Questions focus around whether or not participants gain social support, learn performance enhancement techniques, and their current practice of these techniques. The data are analyzed through thematic answers. Responses indicate that the Performance Enhancement Group may be beneficial for the athletes during their rehabilitation process. Subjects expressed that the group provides them with a safe environment in which they may address frustrations related to their injuries, and learn valuable skills to more effectively cope with their situation. Results also reveal that imagery and positive self-talk may be the most beneficial techniques that the athletes utilize during rehabilitation. These two are the techniques that the majority of subjects still incorporate in their everyday life. PEG participants acknowledge that participating in the group may have helped them reduce their levels of stress. The study concludes by offering suggestions for future research in the area of program evaluations and the relationship of social support and injury.
