Abstract

This study reviewed the literature to explore the experiences of support workers (SWs) who support adults with developmental disabilities (DD) in the context of loss and grief. It was evident that SWs experience great successes in supporting individuals with DD in times of loss and grief. However, it was also evident that despite those successes, there are challenges experienced. Although SWs provide important services in the lives of individuals with DD, especially during loss and grief, there are limited resources available to enable them provide support effectively and efficiently. It is hoped that findings of this literature review will enhance current knowledge on the topic,; address possible gaps that exist,; serve as a catalyst for further research on the topic,; provide service agencies with tools;, and provide counselling practitioners with strategies.
