Abstract

This paper documents the exhibition "Neolithic Painted Pottery from Northwestern China" which was held at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco from April 24 through August 5, 1980. I student-curated this exhibit as my Final Project for the M.A. in Museum Studies at John F. Kennedy University in Orinda, California. My goal was to learn how to curate an exhibition. More specifically, I wanted to learn how to curate an exhibition at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. I was taught the underlying philosophy of this institution and the "standard operating procedures" for carrying it out. Another goal which emerged during the process was to learn about the different ways in which the same type of objects might be displayed in museums devoted to other academic disciplines.
