Abstract

Baby Boomer women (ages 45 to 65 years) are beginning to make the transition from middle-age to elderhood. Three main paradigms of health and aging offer some assistance with this transition: (a) successful aging, (b) healthy aging, and (c) conscious aging. Although a number of health education programs for women have arisen from these approaches, none of them provides a holistic solution. Grounded in holistic health promotion theory, the Healthy Ever AfterTM model represents a new approach to health and aging that addresses body, mind, and spirit within the context of community. Its goal is to empower midlife women to envision and embrace a happy and health-filled elderhood. The Healthy Ever After TM workshop helps participants access their innate wisdom and identify what they need to thrive in later life. Through a series of experiential activities, the workshop provides a learning-by-doing introduction to important self-care skills: holistic nutrition, joyful movement, and stress management.
