Abstract

The purpose of this project was to demonstrate how contemporary art museums can improve and expand public programs by targeting a global adult audience through the World Wide Web. The product has two components: 1) a set of guidelines on educational website development for contemporary art museum professionals; and 2) a model Internet World Wide Website accessible from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art's (SFMOMA) homepage. Material for the model website includes photographic images, sounds and texts from a temporary exhibition Raised by Wolves, which focuses on the subject of homelessness. The model website is based on the guidelines and serves as a model for contemporary art museums who wish to use new and existing adult teaching techniques and multimedia/ communications technologies to increase visitors' visual literacy in contemporary art.
