Abstract

Generalized Anxiety Disorders is the most commonly diagnosed disorder of all anxiety disorders listed in the DSM V TR. Despite its prevalence it is one of the most understudied and least understood diagnoses, resulting in high levels of treatment resistance. The following paper seeks to create an integrated understanding of GAD by analyzing five prominent theoretical models which define its current empirically based parameters. The models findings are categorized into cognitive, somatic, and emotional characteristics with most empirical support. This information is combined with therapeutic processes associated with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
