dc.description.abstract | The subjects were 52 student-athletes at two schools in Orinda, California. The study was designed to look at what young athletes want to receive from their parents while participating in sports and how the interaction between young athletes and their parents affects their self-esteem. Health professionals, teachers, and parents alike feel self-esteem in young children and adolescents is very important. This study looks at just how important the parent-young athlete interaction is. Parental interaction with young athletes and the self-esteem of the athletes are the two areas studied. The parents' interaction with their children was measured by a questionnaire designed by the researcher of this study. Self-esteem was measured by the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventories (Coopersnith, 1967). A school form was used to measure those 11 to 15 years of age, and an adult form was used to measure those 15 to 18. The Coopersmith scoring key was used to score the self-esteem inventories. The results of the survey and the questionnaire were recorded and analyzed. The analysis used was a correlation relationship (Kramer's V) between factors of parental support, how the athletes feel, and self-esteem. | |
