Abstract

Descriptive research and case study methods were used in this thesis. The subjects were three San Francisco Bay Area art museums: The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, de Saisset Museum and Gallery, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; and the art collections of three Bay Area corporations: The Bank of America, Federal Reserve Bank, and Amfac, Inc. This study describes and analyzes these six art collections according to their history, background, and collections policies. Specifically, attention is focused on the purpose and scope of the collections, acquisition and deaccessioning policies, record-keeping systems, loans and inventory procedures, collection care, and collection accessibility. Each case study presents data, which are then analysed and compared, to establish the current status of collections policies in the institutions selected.
