The purpose of this master's project was to explore the history and current uses of museum partnerships in the United States as innovative solutions and organizational strategies for solving problems and pursuing educational missions in an era of rapid change. The project examined, in-depth, the site exchange initiative between the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF) and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Beginning in January 1999, the FAMSF / Yerba Buena partnership expanded the idea of the traditional, traveling exhibition to a project that paired two museums, one city and two diverse audiences in a "site swap." The partnership took an approach that included an exchange of facilities, cooperative development of educational and outreach programs, collection-sharing, collaborative audience development and joint fundraising. The product of the master's project is an article for submission to a professional journal. The article traces the development and implementation of the innovative FAMSF / Yerba Buena partnership by examining the collaboration's impact on mission, collection management, audience development, education, finances and staff at each institution. The strengths and weaknesses of the collaboration are analyzed and set forth for museums and other arts organizations considering such partnerships.
