Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the specific coaching behaviors that facilitate team cohesion, and look at the relationship between cohesion and success. The study looked at collegiate team sports and participants included three college coaches of a team sport with at least five years coaching experience, and three college athletes who have played for the selected coach for at least two seasons. The qualitative method of grounded theory was used to investigate these strategies used by collegiate coaches, and what specifically contributes to team success. Results showed that by honoring and respecting the legacy traditions of teams, they could achieve team cohesion. The study suggests that successful recruiting, effective communication, player leadership roles, and player satisfaction are all components of team cohesion. The study also suggests that there is a relationship between team cohesion and success. The components that achieve team cohesion are also evident in what was found to contribute to success. The research demonstrates that the coaching staff sets the standard, and as the team evolves, the players creating a cohesive unit carry the legacy forward.
