Abstract

The focus of the current study was to look at participation motivation in women's basketball. The level that was chosen to focus on is the Junior College level. This level is the in-between level that has not received as much attention as the four-year schools, and high schools. The attitude at that stage is somewhat like "I don't want to play no more after high school" or "this may be my last opportunity". Another reason may be that this may be the only way to get to a four-year school. Once we get an understanding of these ladies' motivation, the next question is "Does the coach's understanding of the players' motivation impact the player's motivation as well as their performance?" The main questions in this study are: why are these ladies playing basketball at the Junior College level and how can their experiences become better, plus what suggestions might benefit future Junior College basketball players as well as future Junior College coaches?
