Abstract

The purpose of this project was to produce a procedures manual for the registration of temporary exhibitions at mid-to-large-size art museums. The manual is addressed to beginning registrars. New exhibition registrars need practical training and contact with more experienced registrars; this manual can act as an additional tool in their learning process. To produce this manual an examination of the registration procedures for planning, implementing, and touring temporary art exhibitions was conducted through research and interviews. The techniques used by a group of registrars from Bay Area art institutions were examined and, using the information gathered from these various registrars, the manual was produced. Because the manual will not answer every possible question on the topics it attempts to cover, an annotated bibliography is also included which lists sources to consult for further information.
