Abstract

A family based and community building approach to ADHD can help to provide sustainable, positive changes to the lives of children and families affected by this condition. Whole Foods, Whole Families is a holistically centered, integrative program designed to help families living with ADHD build a strong family foundation in order to better manage this condition. As a series of six cooking classes, it focuses on five core components of Cohesive Family Dynamics, Community Building, Confidence development, Collaborative Learning, and Continuing Support. It explores various modalities with a focus on nutrition and a strengths based approach, and gives reasons why the traditional medical approach of pharmaceutical intervention is failing many families. This program encourages families to rediscover the art and science of cooking and eating healthy meals together, whilst also helping to create a sustainable community of ADHD families to learn from and support each other. It discusses approaching ADHD from a holistic perspective and outlines the benefits of undertaking a whole family approach to treating this childhood disease.
