Abstract
This paper explores the meaning of holistic health and holistic education and how these concepts can be applied to the care of an elderly population. I propose that the current Western medical model is not successfully addressing many ailments that we have come to understand are rooted in our lifestyles, thoughts, and emotions and manifest as illness in the mind-body continuum. In this paper, I will review research conducted to determine the healing potential of three specific alternative health modalities: meditation, guided imagery, and yoga; I will postulate how integrating Holistic and Western medicine may benefit the elderly; and I will address the economic challenges of providing quality health care as we reach the first decades of the new millennium.
