Abstract

This thesis is the result of an Integral Research project investigating the effective use of musical practices for personal growth within the framework of Integral Life Practice. The Integral Research methodology merges data from third-person, second-person, and first-person methods to gain an understanding of a topic from multiple perspectives. In this thesis, the third-person research takes the form of a literature review of multiple theoretical fields surrounding the research topic. The second-person research takes the form of two interview analyses and an Internet focus group analysis investigating discussions of issues related to musical practice and personal growth practices. Finally, the first-person research takes the form of phenomenological analysis and structural analysis of my own process of undertaking musical practices within the Integral Life Practice framework. Overall, this thesis illustrates the potential for effectively utilizing musical practices for personal growth within Integral Life Practice.
