Abstract
I feel that costume is representative of the individual who makes and wears it. As such, it illustrates the relationship between an individual and her/his environment. The human need to establish a recognizable appearance seems universal. One can create the illusion of being linked to a profession, a status, or opinion by wearing certain identifiable clothing. I wear my clothes as a visual presentation of myself. As I anticipate each event in my life, I evaluate my feelings and aspirations for that occasion and clothe myself to facilitate realization of my ends. One's personal identity is literally wrapped up in her/his clothes, and the garments become labels--a visible shorthand for one's essence of person, real or imagined. I present here a collection of costumes in which I use elements-- geometric shapes, pleats, color and fabric-- that are inspired by ethnic costume design.
