Abstract
Emerging research is showing ketamine has rapid anti-depressant effects in patients struggling with treatment-resistant depression. Using ketamine alongside therapy in what is called ketamine-assisted therapy is reported to maximize these anti-depressant effects and help integrate these psychological gains into flourishing over the long-term. Current conventional treatments have not been recording adequate efficacy, and reportedly failing to meet the ever growing demands for effective anti-depressant treatments. However, ketamine is also not safe for everyone, and researchers call for further investigation into its safety, efficacy, and suitability to treat mental distress in clinical populations with short-term, repeated, and long-term use. This paper uses the therapeutic framework of Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) to discuss how therapy and ketamine can work together to provide both symptom reduction and flourishing.
