Abstract
The purpose of this project is to explore and to assess the current practices for packing and shipping fine art photographs used by registrars at museums with photography collections, and professional art handlers in the United States. Photography as an art medium has traditionally been low in value compared to paintings. This enabled many museums to develop photography collections. Low values combined with easy portability often result in unconventional art packing and shipping methods. However, with their value increasing rapidly, more care must be taken when transporting fine art photographs. As an outcome of this project, guidelines have been developed to help museum registrars in the United States plan the most effective and economic method for packing and shipping fine art photographs. Although tailored to suit the needs and concerns of a registrar, the guidelines can also be used by many others involved with photography, such as: non-collecting exhibitions spaces, galleries, artists, conservators, appraisers, auction houses, and museums that use photographs as exhibition support material.
