dc.description.abstract | The research question which inspired this study is, "What is the environment of generativeness?" Through the course of the study it evolved into a question about the relationship between environment and generativeness. A grounded theory approach was selected for this study to permit the research question to evolve as appropriate in response to the data. For this study, five people who demonstrated the quality of generativeness in their work were selected. Unstructured interviews starting with the original research question were conducted. They were analyzed and coded into categories suggested by the interview responses. A pattern of choice emerged. Although people interviewed made different choices about which environmental factors were important to them and different choices as to those factors, they made choices consistent with the type of product they generated, and consistent with their personal styles. The relationship between environment and generativeness which emerged from this study was one of reinforcing circularity. The environment influenced the person who influenced the environment which influenced the person. It did not appear to be reciprocal, because outside influences appeared to intrude. This study appeared to point to a possibility of improving the lives of people living in environments they have little influence over by increasing the environmental choices available to them. | |
