This thesis is a problem-solving project. An attempt will be made to provide working tools to assist museum volunteer directors in administering their programs. The first chapter will concentrate on the role of the volunteer coordinator, explaining the importance this person has in a smooth-running volunteer program. By insisting that the volunteers work on a responsible, professional level and by giving them the opportunities and resources to do so--particularly through extensive delegation of responsibility--a good volunteer coordinator can bring out the best qualities in the volunteers. The following chapter will suggest How to cope with difficult people, emphasizing general categories of problem people into which certain volunteers and paid staff may fall. Continuing in the section about the people involved in a volunteer organization, the third chapter will point out some general types of problem volunteers who can be found in museums-and will offer suggestions for helping them to work more positively within the museum system. The importance of communication among volunteers, the coordinator, and the paid blaff and how this generates support and appreciation and helps to avoid confusion and frustration will be discussed in the next chapter. The final chapters will describe the importance of the organization of volunteers into a formal group which assumes much of the responsibility for its own management. and, finally, the responsibilities of the museum to its volunteers. The conclusion chapter will attempt to bring together the main points which were presented and to answer as many as possible of the major problems raised in the thesis survey.
